Registry Basics 4: Backing up

Editing the Registry should be done with care, and with as much understanding as possible as to
why and where you are making a change. Careless registry editing can cause irreversible damage. You must back up the Registry before you make any change.

Backing up deals wth exporting the registry and later inporting it. Lets look at exporting

To export a Registry key. Go to Regedit. Select the key you want to export. Now Choose File > Export. Save it as .reg. To restore everything you may also do this. Just open the backup software from All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Backup/System Restore. Select the checkbox that says ?System State Data?. This will back up the registry, boot files, and the COM+ class registration database.

To Restore just double-click on the .reg file you saved.
